Let be real here. Why do you need a master degree? Is it because you think it’s easier to land on a job with a master degree? Or you feel you still not ready to work yet? You need to ask yourself why you need to study a master degree. It’s a huge investment in turns of money and time. You can use these funds to start your own company or invest in real estate, stocks, etc. Why invest in a master degree? Is the return really worth it? Or you just want to live in a student bubble to avoid taking full responsibility for yourself economically.
First of all, you need to have a strong reason whether to pursue a master degree or not. I can’t stress enough the importance of why. Once you figure out why, the what and the how will come naturally.
The reason to study a master degree should not be because everyone I know has a master degree so I should have one as well. On the other hand, if you want to drop off school just to follow some successful people’s path because they did it. You should think twice. You shouldn’t do it unless you know you have to for sure.
Here is the rule of thumb: the reason should be unique to you. Otherwise, that’s not your reason but others. In fact, most people get it backward. They usually figure out what because of other people telling them to do so or because this is what most people do. Hence if I don’t do it, I will be the one missing out or left behind. So the next thing they do is to search for how to do it so that they can feel a sense of security not falling behind. Finally, when they achieve the goal where they should be feeling happy and grateful but instead they usually feel empty and disappointed. Why? Because they don’t get what they were expecting when they originally set the goal. They might have a million reason for it but none of them are coming from themselves.
Live with your own purpose and not live to satisfy others expectation. Master degree is not a must. You always have a choice. Find your why. If you don’t know where to start or confuse whether the reason actually belongs you or other, first of all, ask yourself what you will envision your career in three years. Will you be working in a kick-ass company, fun but challenging startups, or your own company? Stop being realistic for a moment. Dream big! Most of people overestimate what they can do in a year but they usually underestimate what they can achieve in 3 years. Just try to imagine you have the superpower to achieve anything for a moment and follow your imagination. Then, come back a year and see where you should be in order to achieve your dream in 3 years. Finally, come back to the year right ahead of you and see where you should be in order to achieve the goal in the second year. Now you should find your own reason.
Here is the final tip for you, never leave a decision hanging there without any action. In other words, once you have made up your mind no matter how big the decision is, act on it right away. Any small action is a sign to show the universe your determination. I will talk more about how the universe work in the upcoming articles. But for now, just trust the universe that it will guide you to the right path for your dream if you have your strong why and keep taking actions.
